(16 ounce) can whole tomatoes -- undrained  
Pastry for 9-inch One-Crust Pie -- (recipe follows)

ONE-CRUST PIE PASTRY  
cup plus 1 tablespoon shortening

tablespoons cold water (2 to 3 tablespoons)  
Cook and stir sausage and onion in Dutch oven until sausage is done;  
drain. Stir in sugar, salt, cabbage and tomatoes. Heat to boiling; reduce  
heat. Cover and simmer 10 minutes.  
Heat oven to 400º. Prepare pastry; shape into flattened round on lightly  
floured cloth-covered board, Roll to fit top of 2-quart casserole. Fold  
into fourths; cut slits so steam can escape.  
Mix flour and water; stir into hot sausage mixture. Pour into ungreased  
casserole. Place pastry over top and unfold; seal pastry to edge of  
casserole. Bake until crust is brown, 25 to 30 minutes.  
ONE-CRUST PIE PASTRY:  
Cut shortening into flour and salt until particles are size of small peas.  
Sprinkle in water, 1 tablespoon at a time, tossing with fork until all  
flour is moistened and pastry almost cleans side of bowl (1 to 2 teaspoons  
water can be added if necessary).
